The Town of Herndon, the largest incorporated town in Fairfax County, Virginia, partnered with CMTA to improve energy performance across nine municipal facilities totaling 192,884 SF. With buildings ranging from public safety and community spaces to public works and recreation facilities, the Town of Herndon sought opportunities to improve energy efficiency, modernize aging building systems, and enhance performance across its diverse portfolio.
To support these goals, CMTA conducted an investment-grade audit to evaluate existing building systems and identify energy conservation measures that would reduce energy use while improving overall system performance. The recommended improvements focused on replacing inefficient equipment and integrating key systems through a centralized building automation platform, providing the Town with greater visibility into and control over facility operations.
Following the audit, CMTA worked with the Town of Herndon to develop a phased implementation approach that aligned with its priorities, including a master contract to replace all building HVAC systems. Phase one includes HVAC renovations at the Herndon Municipal Building, Council Chambers, and Town Shop/Public Works Complex; LED lighting upgrades at the Herndon Police Department; and controls upgrades at three additional facilities.
Beyond project implementation, CMTA supports the Town through a maintenance contract that provides ongoing service and maintenance management for all municipal buildings, helping maximize system performance and protect the Town’s long-term investment. With $150,121 in guaranteed savings, the project provides the Town of Herndon with a strategic path for modernizing key building systems and optimizing energy performance across its municipal infrastructure.
