The First Financial Convention Center in downtown Cincinnati underwent a major transformation focused on creating a more modern, efficient, and welcoming destination. Partnering with TVS and Moody Nolan, CMTA provided master planning and engineering design for the center's $264 million renovation and expansion. The project modernizes critical building infrastructure while supporting the City of Cincinnati's broader decarbonization and energy efficiency goals.
Sustainability and long-term building performance were important considerations throughout the design process, with an emphasis on reducing energy use, modernizing aging infrastructure, and preparing the facility for the future. CMTA began by conducting a detailed evaluation of existing MEP and fire protection systems. The resulting recommendations targeted critical upgrades, including reducing natural gas dependency and enhancing energy efficiency.
The team implemented a suite of sustainability measures designed to maximize energy efficiency and occupant comfort while minimizing environmental impact. Key upgrades include:
-
Energy-Efficient Windows: Dual-pane windows with specialized coatings provide abundant natural light while controlling solar heat gain to reduce HVAC demand.
-
Smart Lighting: Over 90% of the facility's lighting was upgraded to LED, paired with photocells and occupancy sensors for real-time energy savings.
-
Next-Generation HVAC Systems: State-of-the-art controls dynamically adjust airflow based on occupancy, enhancing comfort without unnecessary energy use.
-
On-Site Solar Power: The introduction of 588 photovoltaic (PV) panels, generating approximately 433,415 kWh of energy in the first year, helps offset daytime energy consumption, from lighting to HVAC systems.
The renovation also included preparing the building to host up to 2 MW of solar capacity in the future, giving the facility room to grow its renewable energy capabilities.
The expanded facility now features a 2.5-acre extended outdoor plaza at the building entrance, offering vibrant new spaces for guests and events. Wider concourses improve traffic flow, while the reimagined exterior significantly increases natural light. Inside, 24 air handlers and all primary electrical switchgear have been replaced, replacing dated systems with modern efficiencies.
The center also connects to the new Marriott Headquarters Hotel, which CMTA is concurrently designing, via a skywalk—blending both function and convenience to meet future demand.
The Convention Center’s transformation is more than a renovation. It demonstrates how existing civic infrastructure can be thoughtfully reimagined to improve energy efficiency, enhance visitor experience, and support long-term operational needs. Through high-performance building systems, renewable energy integration, and a design prepared for future growth, the First Financial Convention Center stands as a model for sustainable convention facilities nationwide. CMTA is proud to have helped deliver a project that will serve Cincinnati and its community for decades to come.
