IU Health Bloomington Campus

IU HealthBloomington, Indiana

The Indiana University Health Bloomington Regional Academic Health Center is a brand new seven-floor, 735,000 square foot acute care facility, with over 115,000 square feet of medical education space. The educational wing was designed to support students from the IU medicine, dentistry, nursing, social work, clinical psychology, and speech and hearing sciences programs. The facility contains state-of-the-art equipment to better serve the residents of Bloomington and surrounding areas. Hospital services include emergency medicine, obstetrics, neonatal intensive care, diagnostic services, intensive care, and surgery. CMTA was the engineer of record for full Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Fire Protection, Low Voltage, and IT/ Communication and Security system design for the replacement hospital which opened in December 2021.

At the start of the project, IU Health had an aggressive plan for involving the local design community in helping with the many aspects of this facility. CMTA was a part of that design group, and at the time, our Technology Solutions group was the only firm selected to work on all buildings and parts of the project. By coordinating with IU Health’s Infomatics and Information Services and Information Technology staff during planning meetings, the designs were developed in sync with IU Health strategies. The facility is outfitted with the latest technology and designed to stimulate creative, interdisciplinary learning, including classrooms for large and small groups and a new Simulation Center with more space and high-tech robotics. Our teams continue to be actively involved while establishing, refining and reviewing several design standards and systems for the campus. CMTA’s technology team also co-authored the security master plan for electronic safety and security design for IU Health.

As the project developed and schedules refined, CMTA successfully assembled a team to meet the high performance design needs of the entire acute care facility. The Indiana University Health Bloomington Regional Academic Health Center has been the catalyst for IU Health to pursue more energy efficient options as they continue to expand across their healthcare network. We are proud of this project and even more proud of the team that made it happen!
