Central Plant Renovation Creates a More Sustainable College Campus

This project was a comprehensive energy upgrade of the 95,484-square-foot University of Louisville Chemistry Building. The work included a full suite of energy-saving improvements, including laboratory renovations, HVAC replacement, LED lighting installation, and cosmetic upgrades throughout the facility.
Key upgrades included installation of a modern laboratory hood controls system with occupancy sensors, along with fume hood replacements designed to integrate with the new controls system and support ADA needs throughout the building. Primary heating was converted to a new high-efficiency hot water system, with steam heating removed entirely. Variable air volume (VAV) boxes were also installed to convert the building to variable airflow systems, supported by a new direct digital controls (DDC) system replacing the existing pneumatic controls.
Air handling units were refurbished with new heating and cooling coils, supply and return fans, and variable frequency drives. Ceiling replacements and LED lighting upgrades throughout the building are further improving both energy performance and the occupant environment.
By upgrading critical building systems and optimizing laboratory ventilation, heating, cooling, and lighting performance, the project reduced overall energy consumption by 46% and exceeded original energy-saving projections. These energy savings equate to 2,021 metric tons of carbon dioxide reduced annually.
The Chemistry Building now consumes nearly half the energy required prior to modernization, demonstrating how strategic infrastructure investments can reduce campus energy consumption while supporting academic and research missions. The project achieved an environmental impact equivalent to 2,027 acres of U.S forest in one year, while creating a more efficient and resilient facility for students, faculty, and researchers.
