Packet Digital L-I Battery Plant

Packet DigitalFargo, ND

CMTA designed an 80,000 SF lithium-ion battery production facility in Fargo, North Dakota, delivering a comprehensive solution to support advanced manufacturing needs. This state-of-the-art facility is designed to produce 5,000 lithium-ion cells per day, which are then assembled into high-energy-density batteries. CMTA served as the mechanical, plumbing, and electrical engineer of record, overseeing the installation of all production systems, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and utilities. The facility is powered by a robust 5,000 kVA electrical service, supported by three main switchboards for power distribution, as well as main distribution and branch panels to ensure seamless power delivery.

Specialized HVAC systems were designed to address the facility’s high-hazard components, incorporating emergency exhaust and control systems that integrate with base building systems to mitigate potential risks from combustible dust and vapors. The design includes approximately 30,000 SF of cleanroom space, maintaining strict temperature, humidity, and filtration requirements critical to the manufacturing process. Along with a robust HVAC design, the plant features extensive utility systems to support the manufacturing process, including nitrogen, compressed air, chilled water, hot water, and vacuum lines.

Additionally, the project includes a modern, 10,000 SF office space, fostering collaboration among staff when not on the production floor. This unique facility represents a pivotal development for the United States, supporting domestic battery production for military applications that previously relied on overseas sourcing. CMTA is honored to contribute to this groundbreaking project, ensuring excellence in design and functionality for a facility vital to our nation’s needs.
