Panhandle State Hospital

Texas Health and Human ServicesAmarillo,TX

The Panhandle State Hospital, located in Amarillo, Texas, is a cutting-edge, three-story psychiatric facility designed to set new standards in patient care and operational efficiency. With a capacity of 75 beds, the hospital is being developed with a strong focus on promoting healing, safety, and recovery while ensuring optimal functionality for medical staff. Scheduled for completion in 2027, this state-of-the-art facility will feature innovative design elements, including private patient rooms for enhanced comfort and dignity, secure outdoor spaces for therapeutic activities, and abundant natural light to create a welcoming and restorative environment.

To meet the demands of a modern healthcare facility, the hospital is designed with robust infrastructure to ensure consistent and reliable operations. Key features include two 750KW bi-fuel generators that provide full backup power capabilities, ensuring continuity of care even during unexpected power outages. Additionally, the mechanical system is designed with resiliency and efficiency in mind, incorporating two 330-ton chillers (N+1 configuration) to deliver uninterrupted climate control and maintain critical systems. The client goals were not only around energy efficiency but also ease of maintenance and service. CMTA accomplished this with simpler systems while optimizing energy and operational efficiencies. These solutions ensure the facility operates seamlessly, safeguarding patient care and staff productivity.

The Panhandle State Hospital combines secure, functional spaces with thoughtfully designed therapeutic environments to advance mental health treatment. By blending facility design with serene outdoor areas, the hospital will deliver a harmonious balance of safety, comfort, and innovation. This project has also recently won the prestigious Design in Mental Health Project of the Year 2025 in the Future Design International Category. This exceptional project exemplifies the integration of engineering excellence and healthcare innovation, creating a space where patients can heal, staff can thrive, and the community can access unparalleled mental health services.
